I didn’t realize what a productive year it’s been—or that it’s been a year already, for that matter—until I received my weekly productivity report from Grammarly.com. Even though I’ve been a freelance writer for twenty years, I went on hiatus (I kept a few clients on the side to keep things going on an extremely part-time basis) for about a year and a half. During that time, I committed to working full-time at the Boothbay Region YMCA in their finance office, during their afterschool program (Fit Kidz), and as a substitute teacher at their Harbor Montessori School and Child Enrichment Center.
Before making the final decision to go back to writing full-time, I had been picking up more clients steadily. It was this week last year that I gave my notice and let my clients know—needless to say; they were delighted. Since then, it’s been incredible, and I’ve developed many more relationships. Here’s what Grammarly.com has to say about that:
I credit my husband for the on-going support he’s given me throughout this entire endeavor, as well as for the dedicated space he built me. He took a shed his father used to use to build fish traps in (his father gave it to him to use as a workshop, and then my husband gave it to me to use as an office), and completely remodeled it into a beautiful office space:
When I work inside the house, I’m distracted by everything imaginable. In here, it’s like I’m “going to work.” It’s complete with heat, air conditioning, tons of storage, and lots of lighting. (Can you tell I love it in here?) Anyway, productivity isn’t an issue when I work in here in comparison to other workspaces I’ve had to “make it work” in the past. Trust me; I’ve had to deal with many—the ends of hallways, corners of living rooms, ends of couches—you name it, I’ve tried it over the past twenty years.
I’m excited to see what the future holds and how many words this next year brings. When I saw this year’s word count, I was floored. I knew I wrote a lot, but I didn’t realize it was that much. Staying busy is my goal and, as I continue to build my business, I know things will get busier!
